Case Study - April cottage, West Chiltington

From the very first glimpse of this lovely cottage, oozing period character, it was plain that the access would be an issue for the owners. Any alterations had to be tastefully done and in-keeping with the age and style of the property.

Requirement:

Widen the access without opening up the view to passers-by and retain some privacy.

Working with the small problem of the stream running along the front of the entrance, we sourced the correct size of land drain pipe which was to join on to the existing pipe under the narrow driveway access.

Once the stream and its flow of water were correctly channelled, we were able to widen the driveway. In this instance timber shuttering was installed so that reinforced concrete could be poured to widen the driveway and supply the necessary strength and support for the larger vehicles that used the driveway, such as supermarket delivery vans.

With the additional width of access now available, it was now time to set to work on the appearance and feel of the entrance area.

Stone walling was used to conceal the concrete, and a chestnut cleft post and rail fencing was installed along with the new 5 bar gate. This was closely followed by a fresh layer of land based shingle to match the existing driveway.

To make the entrance even more inviting, I suggested that some large pots should be placed around the front door area. The choice of clipped box, which was very much at home with period properties and suitable for use in pots and planters, made for a fitting choice which would require very little on-going maintenance.

Testimonial

Goddards did an outstanding job in creating the new entrance and driveway to our house. I am delighted with the end result and would not hesitate in recommending them to others.
